Tq Trans Month of Visibility

Thursday, March 31st is the International Day of Transgender Visibility. It was started in 2009 by transgender activist Rachel Crandall to celebrate trans people, their contributions to society, and to bring awareness to the worldwide discrimination that trans people face in their daily lives. We are turning this day into a whole month of awareness and activism. Our pins, stickers, and logo/pronoun buttons will be available for purchase at local businesses across qathet Regional District. We also have some exciting fundraisers in the works with a few businesses! All proceeds will go towards hosting special events and funding our Helping Hands Project which financially supports our community members who are in need of assistance.

“Inaccessibility of Gender Designation for Youth,” Zeke Chambers

As of January 10th, two-spirit, transgender, and gender diverse people age 12+ in BC are able to change gender designation on their identification without the confirmation of a physician or psychologist. However, people under the age of 19 will need to provide proof of parent and/or guardian support. Trans qathet team member Zeke Chambers has written an article in response to this, arguing that this requirement makes the change of gender designation process inaccessible for many trans and gender diverse youth. https://www.transqathet.ca/writings
